Chapter 28

Eva ran as fast as she could up the hill. As she showed the chief the pendant, she explained that she had bought it for Jasmine a few days ago. The chain was broken.

Did she break it on purpose to leave a clue, or was it yanked off her neck?

The chief said he was getting ready to run the plates on the Mercedes parked there. Eva told him that it looked like a car belonging to a guest who had just checked out of the inn. She turned her head toward the sound of a car getting close. A man pulled into the parking area and got out holding a camera. Officers told Eva he was there to document the area. Eva didn’t think she could be of any more help there. Standing at the edge of the bluff, she took another look up and down the beach. The sun disappeared below the horizon.

Jasmine, where are you?

“Chief, I’m going down to the station to see if Ashley has been able to bring up a plate number. I’ve got the information on Ross with me. I’ll see you down there.”

“Okay, Eva, I’ll be there soon.”

Fifteen minutes later, Eva walked into the New Haven police station. The officer at the desk motioned her into the room where Jason and Ashley were. They were working with the video feed and hadn’t been able to zoom in on the plates yet. Eva paced.

“There’s the car. I’ll freeze the video and see what you can do with it,” Jason said as Ashley transferred that section to her screen. She pulled up a program and started working.

“I hope I can work with this. I’ll crop just the plate and try to sharpen up the pixels. Eva, the vehicle identification book is next to the computer by that wall.” Ashley pointed across the room. “I’ll send a couple images of the top and back views of the car to that computer screen. See if you can match anything up.”

Eva was glad for something to do—anything to help. She started looking through the book for shapes that matched the car’s body style. Fifteen minutes later, she was still at it and had found a good match for the top view.

This view matches the style of a new-model Lincoln. I’ll double-check and see if the back view does too.

Jason called her over. “Let’s see if we all agree on these numbers. They’re starting to come into focus.”

Eva grabbed her papers and walked over to see the numbers coming in more distinctly. “That first number looks like a five to me, and then what is that? A two and a four?”

Ashley tried to get more clarity. “No, the first number is an eight. See when I lighten the shadow on one side of it? It’s an Oregon wine country plate. See where the two letters are set vertically on the left? That’s a W and a C for wine country. I agree on the two and four.”

“I agree too. So far, we’ve got Oregon wine country plates with an eight, two, and a four.
